KADAVU’s main jetty at Vunisea is inaccessible as the causeway is washed out from the impact of Tropical Cyclone Harold.
Photographs released by the Fiji Roads Authority this hour show that the road which vehicles use as the main access onto the concrete part of the jetty is washed out.
The waiting shed and bollard, a post used to prevent traffic from entering the jetty has also been damaged.
Until yesterday afternoon, there had been no communication with the island after TC Harold also damaged four communications tower on the island, cutting Kadavu off from the mainland.
Other FRA Kadavu assets affected are:
Nabukelevu-i-Ra Road – closed. Only 8km is accessible from Vunisea Government Station to Mokoisa village.
Muani Road is closed.
Namara Road-closed. Only 4km is accessible.
Tavuki Road-is accessible to 4WD only.
FRA contractor is working on temporary restoration works on both jetty causeway and roads.
Government officials on the island received communications devices yesterday to be able to advise the National Disaster Management Office in Suva of the extent of damage on the island.
A NDMO chartered helicopter with four officials was sent to Kadavu after TC Harold passed.
The officials included a photographer, a communications specialist, an agricultural specialist and a red cross official.
NDMO Director Vasiti Soko said asides from making an aerial survey of the damage, the crew were sent to restablish communications.
The NDMO has advised Fiji media it would distribute aerial photographs of the damage today.
