Her death brings to 12 the number of people who have died in the second outbreak that started in April this year, and a cumulative total of 14 deaths due to COVID19 since March 2020. Eight other COVID19 positive patients died during the second outbreak, but their deaths have been attributed to pre-existing illnesses. Three deaths – two announced today and one from yesterday – are still being investigated to determine whether they were caused by COVID19.

Meanwhile, of the 215 cases today, two cases are from the Nawakalevu containment zone in Nadi, and one nurse at the Natabua Quarantine Facility in Lautoka, with the remaining 212 cases from the Lami-Suva-Nausori containment zone.

Of the 215 cases, 101 are from existing areas of interest, 18 are from new areas of interest being FMF, New World Valelevu, Police Medical Suva, and Our Lady of Nazareth Wailoku. The remaining cases are contacts of known cases, cases that were seen in screening clinics and were swabbed, and cases under investigation to determine possible sources of transmission.

Fiji’s 7 day average of new cases per day has increased to 203 cases per day or 230 cases per million population per day and 7-day positivity rate increases to 6.3%.
