Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has been confirmed as Fiji’s new President elect, after amassing majority votes in the Fijian Parliament this morning.
The government nominee was elected by a margin of 28-23.
An opposition member voted for government’s nominee of Ratu Wiliame over the Opposition’s nominee – SODELPA MP and paramount chief of the Burebasaga Confederacy Ro Teimumu Kepa.
Ratu Wiliame will take office when current President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote steps down after two terms in office spanning six years.
Ratu Wiliame will hold office for three years, and is eligible for reappointment for another term.
