Fireworks erupted as host country Japan’s Emperor Naruhito declared open the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020, after a one-year delay, with IOC President Thomas Bach describing the occasion as “a moment of hope” after a year of battling with the uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Also at the venue aside from the athletes from 205 countries were some members of the media and dignitaries who witnessed the four-hour opening ceremony which lived up the usual fanfare of flag-waving, eye-catching outfits during the parades, and the atmosphere, among others, culminating with the lighting of the cauldron by Japan tennis star Naomi Osaka.
Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee president Hashimoto Selko also took the time to remember all essential workers including those in medical services around the world for their determination in navigating COVID-19 challenges, and as such assisted in ensuring that the Games’ take place.
Also part of the opening event were students from three areas hardest hit by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
Fiji’s contingent was led by Fijiana captain Rusila Nagasau and swimmer Taichi Vakasama, both Pacific Games gold medallists. Vakasama stood in for two-time Olympian Jerry Tuwai who was stood down at the request of his management team as part of their preparations for their competition which starts on Monday.
But Fiji’s Olympic Games campaign opens tomorrow in Table Tennis with Sally Yee up against Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill in the Women’s Singles Preliminary Round match one scheduled for 12midday (Fiji Time).
