Eight families face eviction, 35 tenants will have utilities cut, and others will have their names published in the dailies as the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) enforces rent recovery.
In a statement, TLTB announced that it was taking action against tenants with long-overdue rent payments, as required by court orders, to protect the rights of landowners and ensure compliance with leases.
As of the end of last month, rent arrears totaled $28.1 million, with 25,444 tenants in arrears.
Of the eight tenants facing eviction, five are in the North-Western region, one in the South-Western region, and two in the Central-Eastern region. Meanwhile, 35 tenants will have their water and electricity disconnected, including 13 cases in the North-West, 19 in the South-West, one in the North, and two in the Central-East. TLTB also plans to publish the names of tenants with significant arrears who have not settled their debts or made payment arrangements.
“We hope that these actions will prompt tenants to settle their outstanding dues and work collaboratively with the Board to avoid further consequences,” the TLTB statement read. “TLTB remains committed to ensuring fair and transparent administration of leases while taking necessary actions to uphold landowner rights.”
Tenants in arrears are encouraged to contact their nearest TLTB office or call 9995 923 to discuss payment options.
