Team Fiji’s Sarah Morgan made significant improvements in the second heat of the Laser Radial competition to finish 41st overall heading into another day of competition today.

The 17-year-old who is also one of the youngest participants in the sailing event, and ranked second-lowest of the 44 competitors, finished 43rd in the first heat and 40th in the second to sit 41st overall heading into heats three and four later this afternoon.

In the first heat, Morgan finished ahead of Papua New Guinea’s Rose Lee Numa who brought up the tail end. Morgan is ranked 232 in the world and her PNG counterpart, 273. In heat two Morgan finished ahead of Mozambique, Antigua & Barbuda, PNG and one of the favourites in America’s Paige Railey (in her third Olympic Games outing) who was disqualified in heat 2 for starting too early.

Overall, at 41st Morgan is placed ahead of the US, Antigua and PNG. Mozambique’s Deisy Nhaquile is 38th overall, buoyed by her 30th place finish in heat one.

Germany’s Svenja Weger is currently first overall after a fifth-place finish in her opening heat and a runaway victory in heat two. Spain’s Cristina Pujol had won heat one, a memorable feat for her given that this is her first Olympic Games outing.
