February 23, 2025

All schools on Vanua Levu, and in Lomaiviti and Lau will be closed on Monday 24th February due to the high potential of Tropical Depression 09F turning into a cyclone.

For the rest of Fiji, schools will remain open.

A statement released by the Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro said the decision was reached after consultations with the National Disaster Risk Management Office.

“In light of the strong winds, heavy rain, and potential disruption due to Tropical Depression TD09F, the Honorable Minister for Education, Mr Aseri Radrodro, in consultation with National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), advises that all schools in the Lau Group, Lomaiviti, and Vanua Levu will be closed tomorrow (Monday, February 24) for the safety of students and staff as the weather remains uncertain.”

“A Southeast wind flow currently prevails over Fiji.”

Radrodro has urged parents and guardians to exercise caution during this time and to plan ahead for safety measures.

As of 3am today, TDF09 was located 350km northeast of Cikobia island and authorities expect the system to gradually intensify over the course of the evening.

“This system is expected to gradually intensify as it tracks south towards Fiji and is forecast to enter Fiji waters later today.”

“This system may bring strong to near gale force winds and an active trough, which will affect parts of the country, especially from later today onwards.”
