The Suva Rugby Union is delighted and excited with the Suva City Council’s approval of part of Karsanji Bhindi Park – Bhindi Industrial for use by the Union.
In a letter to the SRU today, the SCC wrote that they have “approved the use of part of the park for your organization subject to conditions.” The Council will revert to the SRU on the formal arrangements relating to partnership or leasing of the space.
SRU Chairman Colonel Viliame Draunibaka said while the formal arrangements are in motion, this was a great day for sports development and the numerous Suva communities and urban settlements served by the Suva Rugby Union.
“We thank the Suva City Council for recognizing our need and vision for more spaces for sports infrastructure to serve our communities and sports teams and enable them to play in great grounds and conditions,” Col Draunibaka said.
“The Suva Rugby Union has served Suva’s communities for over 100 years, giving many young men and women the opportunity to play for a club or community team and stay engaged in a healthy and wholesome activity and away from crime and drugs.”
Through the Suva Rugby Union, many young men and women have been identified and chosen to join the Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians, secure overseas rugby contracts and also secure work with Military, Police and Corrections services.
Over the years, the SRU has been severely affected by the unavailability of good playing grounds to run their competitions, and have been looking to secure spaces to develop proper playing grounds to serve the over 40 clubs and community teams that play in the union.
The SRU has worked long and hard to secure the requested space and is hopeful all the necessary arrangements will be finalised soon.
