A man and woman accused of robbing a passerby in a street robbery captured on dashcam have been denied bail, with the case now heading to the High Court.
Sireli Veikoso, 22, and Inise Vitalina, 27, appeared before Resident Magistrate Charles Ratakele at the Suva Magistrates Court this afternoon. They have each been charged with one count of aggravated robbery under Fiji’s Crimes Act.
The court heard that on the night of June 8, the two allegedly robbed Shalendra Singh outside Hot Bread Kitchen on Butt Street in Suva, stealing $50 in cash, a mobile phone worth $295, and a BSP bank card valued at $10.
Both have waived their rights to legal counsel and have been served full disclosures.
Veikoso told the court he was the sole provider for his unemployed mother and sister. Vitalina said she was caring for her younger siblings following their mother’s death and admitted to being intoxicated when the incident occurred.
The prosecution objected to bail, highlighting admissions made in caution interviews and supporting CCTV evidence. Prosecutors described the robbery as a serious offence and requested that both accused remain in remand.
Magistrate Ratakele ruled against bail and transferred the matter to the High Court. The first hearing is set for July 9.
