The legal counsel to the FICAC Commission of Inquiry Janet Mason today told Fiji media she has filed a Police complaint alleging that somebody at the Legal Practitioners Unit has tampered with her application for a practicing certificate in Fiji.
Mai TV reported yesterday that the Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu had written to Mason last week to seek clarification as to why she had not disclosed she had a pending disciplinary matter in New Zealand when she recently applied for a practicing certificate in Fiji.
In an interview with the Fiji Times today Mason confirmed that she received the letter from the Chief Registrar last Thursday and asked that they send her a copy of her application.
“They sent it to me and when I saw that, it was not what I had submitted,” Mason said.
“So I’ve actually been to the Police, I have reported it to CID and I’ve made a full statement because someone has falsified my application for a practicing certificate.”
“I was so concerned about being set up about this, that I went straight to the Police, and I did that yesterday.”
Mason says she has not responded to the letter by the Chief Registrar because of the issue.
“How am I going to respond to somebody at LPU who has falsified my document,” Mason said.
“The only response from me is to go to the Police and report it, because that is actually a serious criminal offence.”
In the letter to Mason the Chief Registrar noted that her most recent application did not contain any disclosure of her disciplinary matter in NZ and gave her 5 days to respond.
Mason also revealed today that the Fiji Law Society tried to get her removed from the Commission citing integrity issues. She says the attacks are tactics and attempts to shut the Commission down.
