A team of leading heart surgeons from Singapore’s National University Hospital (NUH) will travel to Fiji next week to perform free heart surgeries for children with congenital heart disease.
The initiative, led by Professor Laszlo Kiraly, is scheduled to take place at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital from 11 to 18 February 2025. Professor Kiraly will be joined by a 22-member team, including specialist doctors from Singapore, a cardiologist from Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital in India, and pediatric ICU nurses from Australia.
This marks Professor Kiraly’s third mission to Fiji, following successful surgical trips in July 2023 and September 2022.
The mission is supported by Singapore’s NUH and Fiji’s Ministry of Health, which will provide local medical personnel to assist during the surgeries.
Since its inception, Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital has achieved remarkable milestones, including:
- 351 free pediatric heart surgeries
- 26,922 free echocardiograms through screenings and outreach programmes
Dr. Krupali Tappoo, Director of Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital highlighted the hospital’s efforts in extending screenings to remote areas such as Kadavu and more recently, Kiribati.
“These screenings are essential for early detection and timely intervention. We will continue providing free heart screenings throughout Fiji and the Pacific Islands, ensuring that every child needing surgery receives appropriate care and follow-up treatment.”
