Fiji’s Ministry of Education has extended school closure, with the anticipated school reopening date now set for Tuesday, June 30.

The statement comes in the wake of an update by the country’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama via tweet this morning that Fiji had cleared the last of its remaining active COVID-19 cases.

Schools were scheduled to reopen Monday, June 15. However, in a statement, the ministry said in the two weeks the ministry will continue its reevaluation of how to reopen schools across the country post COVID-19 especially for those schools requiring rehabilitation due to Tropical Cyclone Harold.

“Further schooling updates will be announced by the Honourable Prime Minister during the launch of the careFIJI app.”

In the meantime, the ministry says students should continue to use the supplementary learning resources including worksheets from schools, radio programming, and video lessons on the Walesi education channel.

“In addition to keeping their children engaged with these at-home materials, parents and guardians are urged to encourage their children to continue practicing safe hygiene and handwashing, as young Fijians will play a vital role in ensuring the health of our country, now and for generations.”
