Fiji’s former Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, is set to appear in a Suva court next week, accused of requesting and obtaining a corrupt benefit without lawful authority during his tenure in 2022.

Currently held in police custody at the Totogo Police Station after questioning at the CID Headquarters last night, he is scheduled to appear at the Suva Magistrates Court on Monday, March 11, 2024.

Saneem faces one count of Receiving a Corrupt Benefit under Section 137 of the Crimes Act 2009. The alleged misconduct occurred between June 1, 2022, and July 31, 2022, in Suva.

During his employment as the Supervisor of Elections, Saneem is accused of obtaining a benefit exceeding $50,000 in deductible tax relief on his back pay from a senior government official.

The prosecution argues that this benefit could influence Saneem’s official duties.
