The England-based Royal Navy Boxing unit is currently in Fiji to participate in specially-organised bouts with their counterparts from the Republic of Fiji Military Force’s boxers and Fiji’s hopefuls for the Paris Olympics in June this year.

Lieutenant Commander Graham Blick of the Royal Navy stated that their purpose in Fiji was to develop the sport and share their expertise with those who have a passion for it in the country.

“We will have two sessions in Fiji, one is today here at the RFMF Hall with the boxers organised by the RFMF and next week we will have bouts with the Fiji boxing team.”

Fiji Amateur Boxing Association Secretary Viliame Kasanawaqa said that they were grateful for the Royal Navy’s visit.

“This is a good experience for our local boxers. It’s a good cultural exchange for both teams, they can learn good traits for one another for the benefit of the sport.”

Kasanawaqa said that the next event on Friday 01 March will be one to look forward to especially as Fiji boxers prepare for an upcoming competition in Thailand which will also include a female participant.

“Jone Davule, Elia Rokobuli and Aminiasi Saratibau will be vying to go to the Paris Olympics so they will be looking to achieve good results in the Thailand event,” Kasanawaqa said.

“Jasmine Daunakamakama will also be going so she can get some exposure at that level of competition.”
