Pornography is Illegal and Victims of Abuse Can Seek Help: Fiji’s Online Safety Commission

March 26, 2025

Fiji’s Online Safety Commission (OSC) has reiterated that pornography is illegal in the country, including both adult material and child sexual abuse content, which is punishable under the Crimes Act 2009.

Offenders could face up to five years in prison or a $4,000 fine.

In a statement, Commissioner Filipe Batiwale called on victims of image-based abuse, including revenge pornography, to report incidents without fear of legal repercussions. The OSC, under the Online Safety Act 2018, offers a confidential platform for individuals to lodge complaints.

Batiwale, who also serves on the Fiji National Anti-Pornography Taskforce, asserted the importance of supporting survivors and ensuring accountability for perpetrators. The commission assures that all cases will be handled with confidentiality and care.

“The Online Safety Commission strongly condemns the circulation of obscene content. However, it is important for victims of image-based abuse to know that seeking help is not a crime. Our role is to support those who have been harmed, and we encourage anyone who has experienced revenge pornography or online abuse to come forward without fear.”

The OSC continues to work closely with authorities to combat illegal online content and provide survivors with necessary support.
