Waisea Nacuqu scored twice in the last three minutes to see Fiji overcome a determined Japan side 24-19 in their opening Tokyo Olympics Rugby 7s match today.
Japan scored two converted tries in the first half to lead 14-12 half-time. They quickly slot in another at the start of the second half rattling the Fijian side and looked to have the game in the bag.
However, Fiji muscled back to level the scores 19-all before Nacuqu crossed over for his second to reclaim the lead and what also proved to be the winning try.
Fiji had started well to score in the opening minute via Jiuta Wainiqolo. The conversion was good and Fiji was ahead before the home side hit back via their captain Chihito Matsui who picked up a loose ball to score and level scores.
Iosefo Masi scored Fiji’s second to reclaim the lead 12-7 before Lote Tuqiri powered his way through, with the extras added to put Japan in the lead at the breather.
Fiji will play Canada next at 8pm later today (Fiji Time). Canada will be looking to bag their first win after suffering a 24-0 defeat to Great Britain.
