Majority of Fiji’s April COVID-19 outbreak deaths in the last 10 days

July 20, 2021

Fiji’s confirmed COVID-19 death toll since the outbreak began in April has risen to 111, of which 55% was reported in the last 10 days after 15 more deaths, all in the Central Division, were announced Monday.

In 10 days between 10 July and 19 July, Fiji reported 61 deaths – 11 more than the number of deaths recorded in 65 days between 5 May, when the first fatality in the outbreak was reported, and 9 July.

This is excluding 17 other deaths that are being investigated to determine the cause of death.

Like the 96 deaths reported since the start of the outbreak, none of the 15 people whose deaths were reported Monday was fully vaccinated; 11 of them were above 60 years of age, two in their 40s and two in their 50s.

Seven of the 15 died at home, and the others died at a health facility where they were referred to in respiratory distress.

Since the April outbreak, 48 other COVID-19 positive patients have died, but their deaths have been classified non-COVID-19 as they were deemed to have been caused by serious pre-existing medical conditions.

Fiji’s confirmed COVID-19 death toll stands at 113 including two in 2020. There have been 125 new recoveries overnight therefore total recovery numbers now stand at 3,890 since 2020.

There are currently 14,247 active cases. There have been 18,228 cases during the outbreak that started in April 2021, after 784 new confirmed coronavirus infections were reported on Monday. This brings to 18,298 total COVID-19 cases in Fiji since March 2020.
