The 49th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament, with a total prize money of $45,000 will provide yet another spectacular array of sevens rugby from clubs around the country.
Considered the biggest local 7s tournament in Fiji, Marist Rugby Club President Lawrence Tikiaram says the event will bring together a good mixture of experienced clubs and players and fresh teams too.
“This year’s tournament will definitely be bigger and there are new formats that we are introducing this time around that will boost the competition.”
Tikaram said the U18 to U20 category along with the women’s competition will hold their finals on the Friday, instead of Saturday, the final day of the tournament.
“We want to give the women’s competition their own specific platform and instead of being crowded with the men’s competition finals we have chosen to have their finals on Friday.”
“Marist Rugby are pioneers in women’s rugby in Fiji and we will always work to promote the advancement of the sport amongst the women. Giving them their own special platform to celebrate their win on Friday will allow them to celebrate their achievements and not be overshadowed by the men’celebrations.”
The tournament was launched in Suva last week and will have $10,000 for the winner of the Men’s category, the women’s winner will take home $4,500, $5,500 will be awarded to the winners of the 18-21 boys champs.
In the U18 category, $1,500 will go to the winners of the men and womens teams separately.
The 49th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament will take place at the HFC Bank Stadium from March 20, 21 and 22.
