A man and a one-year-old child died following a head-on collision on the Labasa-Nabouwalu highway in Fiji’s Northern Division last night.
The accident happened when the man, believed to be in his late 40s, allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with an oncoming car.
Police say the child, who was also travelling in the same vehicle, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the Seaqaqa Health Centre, where he was later pronounced dead.
Three other passengers in the same car sustained injuries and remain at the Labasa Hospital.
The driver of the oncoming vehicle was treated for minor injuries and discharged.
The fatal crash has brought the national road death toll to 10 compared to 17 recorded over the same period last year.
