Mai TV to premiere Oceanic Connections series

August 19, 2024

Mai TV is set to premiere a series on Oceanic Connections this Tuesday, 20th August at 8pm, highlighting ancient and enduring connections between Fijians and the oceans and the challenges to maintaining these connections in the modern age.

The show aims to create awareness and greater understanding on the deep connections Fijians have with oceans from their totems, artefacts, canoes, marine life, corals and shells and their cultural and traditional significance.

The five episodes in the series include; Highways of Peace, Reviving the Great Canoe Journeys, the Shark Sanctuary, Women of the Sea and Reviving the Corals.

From traditional style storytelling to diving with women out at sea, Producer Stanley Simpson says the series will spotlight how many of these connections and way of life are in danger of being lost and dying away.

“We were motivated to produce the series because many of these stories are no longer being told, and we see the importance of action being taken now to ensure these ancient knowledge that has endured for hundreds of years remain alive,” Simpson said.

“We hope this will lead to more investment in productions that tell our stories, not only to our people but that this richness be shared with the rest of the world.”

The show was produced with the support of Pasifika on Air from New Zealand and will be shown on Mai TV every Tuesdays at 8pm.
