Twenty local business owners in Fiji have been given a much-needed boost through the Business Ready Support Scheme (BRSS) and the Drua Innovation Small Grants Scheme 2.0.
These programs, run by the iTaukei Trust Fund Board (TTFB) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aim to support small businesses by promoting innovation, sustainability, and community resilience.
One of the recipients, Josaia Turagacati, better known as “Josh the Groomer,” owns a small barber shop at the Flea Market in Suva.
Grateful for the support, Josh said, “Receiving this grant is a boost to the business. It will enable us to buy equipment, enhance our service, and afford things that we were unable to afford back in the years.”
He started his barber business in 2020 and officially opened a shop in December 2022. Reflecting on the challenges he faced, Josh added, “Through sacrifice and enduring hardship, I am totally thankful because, through this grant, we are able to enhance whatever we need so that our customers get the service they have been wishing for.”
The BRSS and Drua Innovation Small Grants Scheme 2.0 are designed to help small entrepreneurs like Josh secure the funding they need to grow their businesses. The focus is on promoting sustainable development, gender inclusivity, and supporting traditional resource owners. These grants provide crucial financial assistance to help businesses flourish in areas that can benefit their local communities.
The 12 recipients of the BRSS and 8 recipients of the Drua Innovation grants were chosen after a competitive selection process. Each of their projects shows strong potential for innovation, sustainability, and long-term community benefits.
Josh, like the other recipients, is excited about the future of his business, saying, “This grant will help us transform ideas and promote the barber industry.”
The handover ceremony was held today at the GCC Lounge in Nasese.
