“I am not part of it” – MP Ketan Lal on new Fiji Opposition Party

January 20, 2025

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has clarified that he is not part of the group of Members of Parliament who will form a new party to contest the general elections next year.

Lal stated that he was not part of the group looking to form a new party but remains part of the G16 Parliamentary Opposition.

“I am not involved in the formation of this new political party and I am not a part of it. I respect the choices of other Independent Members of Parliament and their freedom to pursue whatever path they choose, including forming a new party.”

“However, I will continue to be part of the G16 Parliamentary Opposition group as I firmly believe that this group, as an Opposition, has been a strong force in keeping the government in check. This accountability is of utmost importance to me and remains my primary consideration.”

Lal also said that future political aspirations were yet to be confirmed.

“At this time, I am not interested in discussing my future political standing. I request that all inquiries regarding the new political initiative be directed to LOP Hon. Inia or Hon. Jone Usamate.”

Earlier today, Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu announced that G16 members of the Opposition will come form a new party for the 2026 elections.

“We will build on the values that we aspired to as Fiji First, we have learnt from what we achieved as Fiji First and will build on that. We will also rectify our shortcomings and work on that.”
