Fiji’s Weather Office predicts up to three tropical cyclones are likely to pass through the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with one or two likely to reach severe TC status (ie category 3 or higher) in the upcoming 2023-2024 season.
The upcoming cyclone season runs from next month to April 2024.
Fiji’s Minister for Met Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau warns that the assessment from the Fiji Met services shows that all parts of the country are equally at risk, noting as well the possibility of extensive flooding, and the likelihood of cyclones occurring out-of-season.
“The peak cyclone season in the region is typically in January to March, but out-of-season cyclones are possible,” Ro Filipe said.
“They have occurred in the region of October in May, and sometimes even in September and June.”
Communities are advised to remain alert, heed warnings, and prepare to mitigate the impact on life and property.
The release of the outlook coincides with the National Disaster Management Awareness Week scheduled to start tomorrow through October 18.
