Government Cracks Down on Reckless Driving with Tough Penalties

February 7, 2025

Drivers of government vehicles found guilty of reckless driving or misuse will face strict penalties, including surcharges, suspension, and termination, as the Fiji Government intensifies its crackdown on unsafe driving.

This comes after two Government vehicles were involved in a multi-vehicle accident on Laqere Road during rush hour yesterday morning, resulting in at least four people being taken to the hospital with injuries.

In a statement, Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad announced that stronger disciplinary actions would be enforced to curb reckless behaviour among Government drivers.

“The Government is deeply concerned about the increasing incidents of overspeeding, reckless driving, and misuse of Government vehicles,” Professor Biman said. “A strict warning has been issued to all Government drivers to ensure full compliance with road safety regulations and the responsible use of Government vehicles.”

To enhance accountability, a toll-free complaints hotline, 1526, has been introduced for the public to report reckless driving.

Permanent Secretaries and transport officers have also been directed to closely monitor driver behaviour.
