A former senior officer at the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has been sentenced to three years in prison for abuse of office.
Inosi Tauvoli, 40, was found guilty of approving land leases for three Chinese nationals without following proper procedures.
Lautoka High Court judge, Justice Aruna Aluthge, said abuse of office was a serious offence, particularly in public institutions, and called for deterrent sentences.
Tauvoli, the sole breadwinner of his family, will serve two years in prison, with one year suspended for three years. He will not be eligible for parole until he has served 20 months.
He has 30 days to appeal the ruling.
