A magistrates court in Ba has sentenced former Land Transport Authority officer Aisea Tabakau Maiteci, to one year and eight months imprisonment for corruption-related offences.
Convicted on seven counts of Obtaining Financial Advantage, Maiteci fraudulently issued Fiji driver licenses in 2019 for personal gain.
Having pled guilty on September 3, 2024, and admitted to the offences during a FICAC investigation, Maiteci faced stern criticism from Resident Magistrate Nasedra, who highlighted the breach of public trust and misuse of his IT expertise.
The court imposed a partially suspended sentence, with Maiteci to serve one year in prison immediately and the remaining eight months suspended for five years. His offer to repay $1,600 was deemed insincere.
Maiteci has 28 days to appeal the decision.
