A former senior engineer at the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for bribery.
Mohammed Shafraaz Ali was convicted of accepting a return ticket to Sydney, valued at $1,430.60, from Sphynx Solutions Pte Ltd between March and June 2017. The court heard that the payment was made in exchange for facilitating purchase orders for water supply equipment.
Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou handed down the sentence in the Suva Magistrates’ Court, imposing a 12-month non-parole period. Ali was also fined $3,000, with an additional 300 days in prison if the fine is not paid by June 20.
He has 28 days to appeal the conviction and sentence.
