Fiji’s outgoing President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, has called on the government and the people of Fiji to continue prioritising the nation’s welfare and security, ensuring protection for both citizens and visitors.
In his farewell address at a traditional ceremony held at the State House today, Ratu Wiliame—who has served as President since November 2021—spoke in iTaukei, calling on Fijians to remain united in support of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and his government.
“As I return to my traditional duties and home, I want to assure you that my door remains open to all,” he said.
The Turaga Tui Macuata Na iTaukei Bolatagane also addressed members of the diplomatic corps, urging continued support for Fiji, the wider Pacific region, and efforts to protect the ocean—an issue close to his heart. Known for his environmental advocacy, Ratu Wiliame has been a prominent voice for ocean conservation and climate action throughout his presidency.
In his farewell remarks, he called on Fijians to extend the same level of support to his successor, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Tui Cakau, as they had shown him during his presidency.
Ratu Wiliame, who became the youngest person to assume the presidency when he took office on 12 November 2021, has completed his three-year term. The outgoing president was offered the chance to serve a second term but declined, paving the way for a new leader to take charge. He urged Fijians to offer the same support to his successor, the Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as they had given him during his presidency.
Ratu Naiqama is set to be sworn in as Fiji’s new President next week.
