Fijian National Caught Smuggling Meth at Nadi Airport

February 4, 2025

Customs officers at Nadi International Airport intercepted a 33-year-old Fijian national attempting to smuggle what is suspected to be methamphetamine into the country, authorities confirmed.

The suspect, who arrived on an international flight last Friday, was found with 2.3 kilograms of a white crystalline substance hidden in food products and a backpack with false walls. Preliminary tests confirmed the substance as methamphetamine.

The passenger was flagged through Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) risk-based selection system, which profiles and targets high-risk individuals.

“Our officers are fully prepared to fight this war on drugs and protect our borders,” FRCS Chief Executive Officer Udit Singh said. “Illicit drug smugglers will be caught.”

He added that FRCS has enhanced its border security through capacity-building programs and the recent establishment of a Passenger Intelligence and Targeting Unit.

The case was handed over to the Fiji Police Force, which deployed its K9 unit as part of the joint operation.
