Fiji Records Eight Youth Suicides in 2024

September 11, 2024

The Fiji Police Force reported 63 suicide cases between January 1 and August 22, with eight victims under 18 years old.

Men accounted for 50 of the suicides, and those over 60 saw the highest numbers, with 19 deaths.

During the same period, authorities also registered 44 attempted suicides, five involving minors.

Causes include spousal and family disputes, stress, and illness.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci called the statistics “extremely worrying,” urging communities to promote a culture of support and acceptance. He highlighted cyberbullying as a growing challenge, underscoring the need for compassion, both online and offline.

The overall figures have remained consistent with the same period last year – with 66 suicide cases and 47 attempts.
