Fiji Police Seize 4.9 Tonnes of Marijuana and $70K in Drug Proceeds

April 16, 2025

Fiji Police seized nearly five tonnes of marijuana in a single month and over FJ$70,000 in suspected drug proceeds – in a major crackdown under Operation Sasamaki, launched on March 1.

The figures were revealed today in a press briefing where Tudravu spoke on the intensified nationwide drug crackdown under Operation Sasamaki, launched on March 1, describing the drug crisis as “a matter of life and death.”

Between March 1 and 31, a total of 4.9 tonnes of marijuana were seized, with over 3.5 tonnes found in Kadavu alone — long known as a hotspot for illicit cultivation. Additional seizures and cultivation raids were conducted across various areas, including Savusavu, Keasi, Rakiraki, Levuka, Vunidawa, Navua, Lami, Nalawa, and Tavua.

More than 100 arrests were made in March, with 96 individuals charged and brought before the courts. Police also seized proceeds of crime — including over FJ$70,000 in cash and building materials — believed to be connected to drug operations.

While marijuana made up the bulk of the seizures, methamphetamine continues to appear in smaller but concerning quantities.

No clandestine labs have been found, but police believe local production is ongoing.

Tudravu said investigations are focusing on entire drug networks—from growers to buyers—and warned of generational consequences if the issue isn’t tackled now.

“We’re not backing down,” he said, thanking community groups and informants for their support in the nationwide effort.
