Fiji’s Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has ordered an immediate investigation into claims that a police officer allegedly assaulted a man in Nausori over the weekend.
The incident, shared on social media sparked public concern over police conduct and the use of force.
The Acting Commissioner directed the Director of Internal Affairs to lead the investigation, assuring the public and the family involved of a thorough investigation.
Chew said that officers are constantly reminded to uphold the rule of law in the execution of their duties as they are all equally answerable to the law.
The incident came to light after a Facebook post by the victim’s sister, who detailed her brother’s alleged assault by a police officer in Nausori.
According to the woman, her brother sustained serious injuries, including a broken jaw, and she also shared a photo of him taken at what appeared to be a hospital.
“The very people in the organisation we thought should be upholding the law are the ones taking the law into their own hands,” the victim’s sister wrote, demanding accountability for the officer’s actions.
