June 28, 2024

Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka today announced the appointment of Alitia Bainivalu as the new Minister for Fisheries & Forests, following the resignation of Kalaveti Ravu from the position.

Ravu resigned this morning to comply with legal procedures amidst ongoing legal proceedings. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) charged Ravu with Abuse of Office from alleged interference in an investigation into illegal Beche-de-mer trade between July 25 and August 31, 2023.

In making the announcement, Prime Minister Rabuka said that Ravu’s resignation should not be construed as an admission of guilt or innocence.

“I respect the legal process and the independence of our Judiciary,” Rabuka stated in a Facebook post addressing the development.

Bainivalu, currently serves as Assistant Minister for Tourism and Government Chief Whip. She boasts a background as a senior Fisheries Officer and holds academic credentials including a Bachelor of Science from the University of the South Pacific and a Masters in Marine Science from the Tokyo University of Marine Science & Technology.

“I thank Hon Ravu for his loyalty and commitment to upholding the integrity of our government,” Rabuka said.
