Fiji MP Sanjay Kirpal Quits G14 Bloc to Become Independent

July 14, 2025

Fiji’s Opposition MP Sanjay Kirpal has withdrawn from the G14 opposition bloc led by Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu to sit as an independent member of Parliament — the second MP to do so after Ketan Lal’s departure in May.

Kirpal, who missed a key constitutional amendment vote in March after calling in sick, said he wanted to serve “without any hindrance or interference.”

“I have seen politicians who are for themselves, not for Fijians,” he said. “I want to serve wholeheartedly.”

He added that he had informed Seruiratu of his decision and had yet to decide whether he would contest the 2026 election.

Kirpal, a professional valuer, previously stood under the FijiFirst banner in the 2018 and 2022 elections.

It is unclear whether Parliament’s Speaker has been officially notified of his decision.
