Vendors in Fiji have been warned against selling undersized mud crabs, as authorities continue efforts to protect marine resources and ensure sustainability.
Fiji’s Ministry of Fisheries has cautioned sellers that crabs must reach a minimum size of 12.5cm before they can be harvested and sold, in accordance with the country’s Fisheries Act.
The warning follows a joint operation by the Ministry of Fisheries and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division over the weekend, during which enforcement officers carried out spot checks at various fish markets in the Central Division.
A total of 95 undersized mud crabs were seized. Officers also confiscated triton and conch shells, which are protected under the Fisheries Act.
This the ministry says comes in response to complaints about the illegal sale of undersized crabs, prompting authorities to act.
Officials say the operation aligns with efforts to preserve marine ecosystems for future generations.
The ministry has urged vendors to comply with regulations to avoid further confiscations and potential penalties.
