Fiji Braces for Heavy Rain, Flash Flooding, and Strong Winds as Tropical Low Nears

February 21, 2025

Fiji is preparing for severe weather conditions this weekend, as the Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings for heavy rain, flash flooding, and strong winds, with a tropical low-pressure system moving towards the country.

A weak tropical low, currently located to the northwest of Fiji, is expected to intensify and track southeast, entering Fiji’s waters by Sunday, February 23. The system could potentially strengthen into a tropical disturbance or depression, bringing widespread adverse weather.

A strong wind warning is in effect for the Northern Division, northeastern Viti Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups. Winds are expected to reach speeds of up to 75 km/h, with gusts of up to 100 km/h in some areas. The affected regions are also under a heavy rain alert, with localised flash flooding possible.

The warning includes rough to very rough seas, which pose high risks to small to medium sea crafts. Flash flooding could affect low-lying and flood-prone areas, disrupting local communities, businesses, and transportation. The heavy rain and thunderstorms may lead to poor visibility for motorists, and coastal areas could experience damage from strong winds and sea swells.

The public is urged to stay updated with weather advisories and exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone areas and when travelling by sea.

The Fiji Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary.
