FEO reminds candidates on 2022 Elections eligibility requirements

May 25, 2020

Fijian Elections Office today reminded interested candidates on their residential status as required under the Electoral Act to be eligible to contest the 2022 General Elections.

Making the announcement at the FEO Office in Suva, Electoral Commission Chairperson Suresh Chandra said potential candidates need to be aware of provisions under the Electoral Act 2014, Section 23 (4) (c) which states that a person is eligible to be nominated as a candidate for election to Parliament only if the person is ordinarily resident in Fiji for at least two years immediately before being nominated.

“If you are planning to contest in the next General Election, you will need to be in the country for an aggregate period of not less than 18 months out of the two years immediately after being nominated.”

The elections office also launched the Online Register for Political Parties, accessible via the FEO website, which outlines names of the parties, details of their office holders and the date of registration, allowing voters and/or general public access to information on the parties.

Chandra also announced plans to carry out, one year from now, ball draw to select the first number that will appear on the ballot paper for the 2022 General Election. Regarding polling venues, the FEO is also considering the same 1,423 venues used in the 2018 General Elections for the 2022 edition. Venues will be confirmed after a verification process by FEO.

Meanwhile, the FEO has decided to extend the phasing out of VoterCard 1.0 or the green coloured VoterCard to 30 June 2021.
