Two children below the age of 10 died in two separate road accidents in Vanua Levu over the weekend, prompting calls to parents to ensure their children are supervised at all times.
Dead are an eight-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, both of whom died in similar circumstances.
According to Fiji Police, the eight-year-old was crossing the road Friday afternoon in Delailabasa when he was allegedly bumped by a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old labourer of Vunika, Labasa. The day after in Yaroi, Savusavu, the 6-year-old was bumped by a vehicle driven by a 48-year-old man.
Chief Operations Officer (COO) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abdul Khan said the accidents should be a concern for all parents and reinforced the importance of supervision.
ACP Khan is also calling on drivers to be alert to the movement of children on our roads.
The road death toll currently stands at 43 compared to 25 for the same period last year.
