Fiji reported 22 fatalities overnight – of nine deaths from COVID-19 and 13 deaths with COVID-19 – and a record 6,040 recoveries as active cases drop well below 3000, for the first time in months.
There are now 2,864 active cases reflecting late June numbers.
With 55 new infections recorded during the reporting period, Fiji has had 51,258 during the outbreak and a total of 51,328 cases since March 2020.
Of the country’s total cases, 92 per cent have recovered, 2 per cent died, and 6 per cent remains active.
Deaths
Eight were reported from the central division and one from the western division.
“Five deaths are being reported from July and three deaths are being reported from August today due to a delay in the issuance of the official death certificate,” the Ministry of Health said.

The latest deaths from COVID-19 take the total number of persons that have died from COVID to 647 with 645 having occurred during the outbreak that started in April.
There have been 13 more deaths of COVID-19 positive patients. However, these deaths have been classified as non-COVID deaths by their doctors. The doctors have determined that these deaths were caused by a serious pre-existing medical condition and not COVID-19. The total number of people who have died with COVID-19 stands at 526.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 58 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital, of which 34 are admitted at the Lautoka Hospital and 24 are admitted at CWM hospital, St Giles, and Makoi. Six patients are considered to be in severe condition, and three are in critical condition.
Screening Update
A total of 8,406 individuals were screened and 490 swabbed at our stationary screening clinics in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 730,829 individuals screened and 104,161 swabbed to date. The mobile screening teams screened a total of 478 individuals and swabbed a total of 44 over the last 24 hours. This brings the cumulative total to 852,729 individuals screened and 77,557 swabbed by the mobile teams.
Testing Update
A total of 375,168 samples have been tested since this outbreak started in April 2021, with 418,029 tested since testing began in March 2020. 1048 tests have been reported for 5 October. The 7-day daily test average is 1,010 tests per day or 1.1 tests per 1,000 population. Weekly testing is at 7.5 tests per 1000 population. The national 7-day average daily test positivity is 5.3%.
Vaccination Update
A total of 594,242 adults in Fiji have received their first dose of the vaccine and 478,535 have received their second doses. Based on our updated total population of 618,173 people aged 18 years and over (adults), the vaccination coverage rates are 96.1% for adults who have received at least one dose, and 77.4% are now fully vaccinated nationwide.
As for children, 22,130 children in Fiji have received their first dose of the vaccine as of 5 October.

The 7-day average of new cases per day is 54 cases per day or 61 cases per million population per day.
