A total of 118 new coronavirus infections and one COVID-19 death were reported for the 24-hour period ending at 8am today.
Having accounted for the 113 new recoveries, one COVID-caused death and four others involving COVID positive patients whose deaths have been attributed to other causes, bring to 12,948 the number of active cases there are in Fiji.
The new infections take to 50,128 the number of cases recorded in the outbreak that started in April this year. There have been a total of 50,198 since the first case in March 2020. Total recoveries stands at 36,528.
Deaths
The lone reported death involved a 59-year-old man from Nadi who presented to the hospital in severe respiratory distress. His family reported that he had a history of a cough and shortness of breath five days before his presentation. He was transferred to the Lautoka Hospital, where he died on 19 September, 28 days after admission. He was not vaccinated.
There have now been 576 deaths due to COVID-19 in Fiji, with 574 of these deaths during the outbreak that started in April this year.
There have been four more deaths of COVID-19 positive patients. However, these deaths have been classified as non-COVID deaths by their doctors. The doctors have determined that these deaths were caused by a serious pre-existing medical condition and not COVID-19. With the four deaths, Fiji has had 416 COVID-19 positive patients who have died from the serious medical conditions that they had before they contracted COVID-19.
Screening Update
A total of 9,896 individuals were screened and 685 swabbed at our stationary screening clinics in the last 24 hours, bringing Fiji’s cumulative total to 634,461 individuals screened and 97,953 swabbed to date. The mobile screening teams screened a total of 1050 individuals and swabbed 443, for a cumulative total of 839,328 individuals screened and 75,957 swabbed by the mobile teams.
Testing Update
A total of 358,649 samples have been tested since the outbreak that started in April 2021, with 401,510 tested since testing began in March 2020. A total of 1343 tests have been reported for 20 September 20. The 7-day daily test average is 1,274 tests per day or 1.4 tests per 1,000 population. Weekly testing is at 8 tests per 1000 population, which remains above the WHO recommended level of 4 per 1000 population per week.
The national 7-day average daily test positivity is 10.8%.
