Opposition MP Joseph Nand has called on the Coalition government to be more stricter and put in place measures that ensures that resorts and holiday destinations are well equipped to contain situations that arise concerning the safety of guests.
This is is after a Japanese drowned while out in waters around the Sigatoka resort that he was holidaying in.
MP Nand said the incident will cause tourists to doubt the services offered by the hotel destinations.
“The public generally believes that resorts adhere to safety standards, but these findings are deeply disturbing and raise serious concerns about the ability of other resorts to ensure the safety and well-being of their guests. Immediate strategic actions are
necessary.”
“This incident also highlights a significant failure by the authorities responsible for monitoring OHS compliance in resorts. It appears that there has been a severe lapse in regular inspections and enforcement.”
Nand has commended the Minister responsible for initiating an investigation into the incident.
“I urge the Minister to mobilize his team to conduct thorough inspections of other resorts, rather than assuming that all is well.”
“The government must be accountable not only to our citizens but also to our visitors, ensuring their safety and care are paramount.”
It is believed that the man called out when he began struggling against the tides but staff hesitated. After the man was recovered and a doctor and another guest worked to perform CPR. Upon checking there was no defibrillator and other necessary equipment at the hotel. The man was later transported to the Sigatoka Divisional hospital.
