Cause of Ba and Raiwai fires unknown at this stage: Police

Fijian authorities are still to determine the cause of two massive fires that happened within hours in Ba and Raiwai last night, destroying buildings and shops.

In Ba, eight shops at the Ba Central Arcade were destroyed and in Raiwai, Tappoos’ Warehouse at Carpenters Street went up in flames.

Police said their Ba office was notified of the Ba fire before 8 pm and in Raiwai, after 11 pm at the Raiwaqa Police Station.

“The first report of the fire was received at the Ba Police Station before 8 pm last night. A security officer rang and notified the Police of a Fire at the Ba Central Arcade. The fire is believed to have started on the second floor, however, this is subject to investigation.

“The second case of fire was reported at the Raiwaqa Police Station after 11 pm last night. Determined NFA and Police officers attended to the scene at the Tappoos Warehouse, Carpenter’s St, Raiwai. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Investigations continue.”
