ADRA Fiji Hosts UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction

October 19, 2023

Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Fiji recently hosted the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, Mami Mizutori, in Naqali village in Naitasiri, a flood-prone area, and one of its implementing communities in the country.

Naqali often serves as an evacuation center for flood-affected people of this province, as it is vulnerable to heavy rainfall due to its low-lying location with three major rivers alongside.

ADRA Fiji, in partnership with the French Government’s Department of Crisis Support, has ensured that Naqali operates an inclusive evacuation center.

The disaster risk reduction efforts in this community include evacuation center management training and retrofitting centers to be disability-friendly.

In addition, UN Women’s Women’s Initiatives for Inclusive Local Resilience and Empowerment Program (WIILREP) is working to enhance the adaptive capacities of women and girls in vulnerable Fiji communities. Their project involves community-based disaster management training, DRR women in leadership training, support for women-led businesses, and livelihood support for women.

This high-level delegation’s visit is a historic milestone for Naqali.

ADRA Fiji is also honored to have been selected in Fiji to showcase its work relating to DRR, climate change mitigation, and building resilience.
