Twenty-nine more people died from coronavirus in Fiji between 6 July and 17 September, among them a fully vaccinated individual who becomes the fifth person in the country to die from COVID-19 despite receiving both jabs.
The Ministry of Health did not provide further details of the fully vaxxed deceased in its recent update, only stating that the individual was elderly with severe comorbidity. Deaths of fully vaccinated individuals equate to 0.8 per cent of total COVID-19 deaths reported in Fiji since 2020.
The previous four fully vaccinated deaths were recorded in the western division in August with the victims aged between 49 and 55 years.
Of the other 28 deaths, 24 were unvaccinated, and four had received one dose of the vaccine. The newly announced deaths take to 621 the number of people who have died from COVID-19 in Fiji.
Sixteen other COVID-19 positive patients have also died taking the number of people to have died with COVID-19 to 462.
Meanwhile, 65 more coronavirus infections and 196 new recoveries were recorded in Fiji yesterday. The total number of COVID-19 cases in Fiji stands at 50872 of which 50,802 were recorded during the outbreak that started in April 2021.
Of Fiji’s total COVID-19 cases, 25.3 per cent remains active, 72.6 per cent have recovered, and 2.1 per cent died.
