Two returnees to Ovalau tested positive, prompting the suspension of repatriation to the island as the medical team in Levuka carries out contact tracing works.
The duo were among 93 new cases reported for the 24-hour period that ended at 8am yesterday.
Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong said the returnees were under quarantine at the Levuka facility. They were tested on 20 September, returning positive results three days later.
Another four quarantine cases that also tested positive have been confirmed as historical cases.
There have been 64 new recoveries since the last update, which means that there are now 12,999 active cases. There have been 50,470 cases during the outbreak that started in April 2021, and a total of 50,540 cases in Fiji since the first case was reported in March 2020, with 36,524 recoveries.
Deaths
The ministry also recorded the death of a 73-year-old Suva woman from COVID-19 during the reporting period. The woman died at home on Wednesday 22 September. She was not vaccinated.
Her death takes to 584 the total number of COVID-positive patients who have died from COVID.
Deaths of patients with COVID increased to 433 after eight more positive patients died from pre-existing illnesses.
Hospitalisation
There are currently 111 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital of which 46 are admitted at the Lautoka Hospital and 65 across CWM hospital, St Giles, and Makoi. Of the 111 patients, eight are considered to be in severe condition, and four are in critical condition.
Vaccination Coverage – Adults and Children
As of Thursday 23 September, 95.5 per cent of Fiji’s target population has received their first dose and 67.8 per cent have received their second.
As for children, 14,680 children in Fiji have received their first dose of the vaccine.
