Police step up monitoring around Fiji after hate speech warning

July 26, 2021

Police have set up checkpoints around Fiji’s two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, as a precautionary measure.

Yesterday, Fiji Police put out a statement cautioning people to refrain from making hate speech that they said could lead to racial tension.

The warning from the Police stems from heated discussions regarding Bill 17 of 2021 on social media platforms.

Checkpoints have been set up in the West and around the central division likewise on Vanua Levu.

The checkpoints on Vanua Levu also comes after the Courts Fiji Ltd branch was razed to the ground on Saturday night along with a shop on Taveuni.

In Labasa, on the same night, a fire was doused quickly at the Macuata Muslim League mosque in Nasekula.

Similar checkpoints have also been set up in Taveuni, Seaqaqa and other places on Fiji’s second-largest island.
