Fiji’s Table Tennis rep Sally Yee tried her best, but it was not enough losing to Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill one set to four (1-4) in her opening women’s singles preliminary round at the Tokyo Olympics today.
Yee was able to pull back the second set 11-4 within four minutes whilst Edghill won the first, third, fourth and fifth sets 11-5, 11:3, 11-6 and 11-8.
Although she lost, Yee made her Guyana counterpart work hard for the win especially in the last set – where she made Edghill go seven minutes to secure the win.
The defeat also means Yee misses out on a place in round one of the women’s singles competition.
The outing was the 20-year-old’s second consecutive Olympics appearance following her participation at the 2016 Rio Olympics where she finished in the preliminary rounds as well.
Yee was the only Team Fiji athlete rostered to play today. Tomorrow, Team Fiji goes into competition again, this time via Sophia Frances Morgan in Sailing. The 17-year-old will be competing in the Women’s One Person Dinghy – Laser Radial. The sailing event starts at 3.05pm (Fiji Time). This is her first Olympics outing. Next week, starting Monday Fiji 7s men get to begin their defence of their Olympics Rugby Gold Medal against hosts Japan. The match is scheduled for a 12midday kick-off.
