Fiji announced 1,043 new cases and 13 new COVID19 deaths, all from within the Lami-Suva-Nausori zone, of which six either died at home (DAH) or were declared dead on arrival (DOA) at a health facility while the others made it to a health facility alive only to succumb to the virus later the same day.
According to the Ministry of Health, five of the 13, the highest announced in a day, had received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, whilst the others were not vaccinated.
Seven other COVID-19 positive patients also died, but whose deaths were attributed to pre-existing medical issues and nine other deaths are still being investigated to determine the cause. These will be discussed once investigations (including test results) and classifications are complete, the ministry said of the nine under probe.
Fiji’s COVID-19 death toll has increased to 98, of which 96 during the outbreak that started in April this year. Over the same period, 41 other patients also died but were deemed non-COVID deaths as they were linked to serious medical conditions these patients had before they contracted the virus, the ministry said.
Total recoveries have risen to 3,765 after 388 patients reportedly recovered overnight, resulting in 13,610 active cases. The total number of cases recorded since the start of the outbreak stands at 17,444 and 17,514 since the first was reported in March 2020.
The country’s national 7-day average daily test positivity has also increased to 24%, nearly five times more WHO ‘safe’ transmission threshold. The 7-day average of new cases per day has also risen to 1000 cases per day or 1130 cases per million population per day. Average daily case numbers are increasing, together with cases of severe disease and deaths.
