Narere Street residents told to stay put for 14 more days

May 5, 2021

Residents of a street in Narere have been advised that they have to be quarantined for 14 more days.

This follows increased Ministry of Health activity in the area.

A resident who did not wish to be named said they were scheduled to complete their initial 14-day lockdown orders this week, only to be told that it has been extended for another 14 days, ending mid-May.

It is understood that MOH officials have been testing people in the area and have advised them that they needed to remain quarantined until 18 May.

The 14-day duration is in line with the virus’ incubation period.

“That means, from the moment a person comes into contact with someone with the virus and gets infected, it can take up to 14 days for the virus to cause symptoms or register a positive COVID-19 test result,” Fiji’s Permanent Secretary of Health Dr James Fong had said in one of his recent statements when explaining the nature of the virus.

“Only after we effectively quarantine an individual for 14 days, and then they register a negative COVID-19 test result, do we know that they do not have COVID-19. But that assurance comes from the fact that we are certain that the individual had zero exposure to the virus for every single day of that two-week quarantine period. Because if they came into contact with someone with the virus during that 14 day period – the incubation period resets to another 14 days.”
