No charges: DPP rules out Rabuka complaint against Bainimarama

March 22, 2021

Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde today ruled that no criminal charges would be filed against Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama over a complaint lodged by former Fijian Leader of Opposition Sitiveni Rabuka.

In a statement, Pryde cited lack of evidence.

Rabuka had deemed “seditious” a comment Bainimarama made at a function on 2 November 2020 and subsequently filed a complaint.

“The police file was sent to the DPP for an assessment of the evidence and a decision on whether any charges should be laid following the complaint,” the statement read. “Following a review of the police docket and the evidence, it is our opinion that there is insufficient evidence to support criminal chargers against the Prime Minister, and therefore, the docket has been returned to police with the instruction not to charge and no further action is required.”
